Data Science for the Public Good Program

The Data Science for the Public Good (DSPG) Young Scholars program provides an opportunity for students interested in research to be a part of a solution focused team using data to inform real public policy decisions. Over the course of a summer, students will learn methods of programming, statistical analysis, and data tools. These skills will be applied to real world problems in communities across Iowa in a collaboration providing research experience to future scholars and solutions needed by communities.

Learn about how Iowa’s helpline systems help people, as well as what improvements are possible.

Discover the resources present in Iowa communities, where systems of care are present and where they are scarce.

Analyze the risk factors for excessive alcohol use in Iowa, where alcohol is most present, and projected trends for future use.

Discover the economic mobility of various locations as determined by an analysis of seven forms of capital within communities.

Find projects from the summer programs of 2020 and 2021, focusing on a wide variety of data driven, community-improving research.
